Restores humus -- the natural source of soil fertility -- and provides sustained nutrients for long-lived plant growth.

Fertil-Fibers™ NutriMulch is an affordable organic fiber bulk. This environmentally safe and easy to use "organics booster" enables soil to function as an integrated, ecologically balanced system. Our objective of improving soil addresses the self-sustaining health of plants, making soil sufficiently rich so plants get all the nutrients they need in a natural, slow release process.

Fertil-Fibers NutriMulch improves the soil's:

  • Microorganisms
Fertil-Fibers NutriMulch supplies the nutrient and energy source for soil microorganisms, enabling them to function in their role of decomposing decayed vegetation, animal and other soil biota. These organic materials are subjected to hydrolytic and oxidative degradation by decaying microorganisms, yielding organic low-molecular weight products that support the growth of soil microbial flora. These processes finally yield a mass of microbial cells, which upon their death together with some other remains, become humus.
  • Humus
Humus is the basis for soil life. Without humus, plants get no naturally formed nitrogen. Without naturally formed nitrogen, plants become weak and more susceptible to disease, drought and insect attack. Humus is much more than a store of nutrients, however; it is also the chief source of the soil's porosity, hence of its oxygen content, and therefore of the efficiency with which nutrients are taken up by the plant. (Because nutrient uptake is a work-requiring process, it is driven by the root's oxygen-dependent metabolism.) Humus mechanically loosens the soil and creates a texture called good tilth.
  • Tilth
Good tilth means soil is soft, porous, easy to work and crumbles easily into fine pieces. Water penetrates the soil better and the soil also holds more water. Tilth prevents the formation of hard crusts on the soil's surface. It allows plants to put out larger root systems easily. When there is lots of air in the soil, microorganisms flourish and speed mineral release. Good tilth allows delicate seedlings to get a good start.

With poor tilth, on the other hand, the soil compacts and will not absorb or release water well, seeds do not germinate, root systems decrease and plants suffer more from drought, disease and lack of nutrients.

Other Benefits of Fertil-Fibers NutriMulch:

  • Reduces or may eliminate the need for the addition of costly topsoil to disturbed sites.
  • Reduces the need for complementary fertilization.
  • Does not import weeds or encourage weed growth.
  • Does not rob the soil of nitrogen.
  • Slow, sustained release of organically bound nitrogen provides sufficient supply of all vital nutrients to germinating seeds and growing plants throughout the first growing season and longer (versus soluble nitrogen, which is often depleted prior to seed germination).
  • Results in far lower concentrations of nitrate in ground water than chemical fertilizers.
  • Economical, environmentally safe, easy to use.

"Fertil-Fibers provided the structural integrity, along with a heavy-duty tackifier, to successfully winterize disturbed areas at the environmentally sensitive Lahontan Golf Course (Truckee, CA), even in the face of the 100 year flooding event of January 1997."

John Steinbacher, Summit Co.

"After prior contractors' revegetation attempts had failed, we addressed the challenge with Kiwi Power and Fertil-Fibers. This combination successfully established both planted wetland plugs and hydroseeded rushes, sedges and native wildflowers at our Reno Airport wetlands project."

John Steinbacher, Summit Co.

Application Rate
Fertil-Fibers NutriMulch is generally applied at a rate of 2,000 lbs. per acre for hydroseeding or drill seeding disturbed sites.

Sites composed of "borrow material" containing low or no organic matter may require higher volumes of Fertil-Fibers NutriMulch.

For Harsh/Sterile Soil
For extremely harsh or sterile soil with minimal microorganisms, we recommend the use of Kiwi Power Organic Soil Treatment in conjunction with Fertil-Fibers NutriMulch. Kiwi Power gives a "microorganism boost" to soils.
